Are you interested in tourism and travel or the marine industry? Have you wondered what it would be like to work on a ferry or in a busy workshop?
Sunferries offers high school students in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to do voluntary and unpaid work experience in our teams, to allow them to "test the waters" and see if their dream job is really what they imagined.
What is involved?
Work experience at Sunferries allows students to:
- observe a range of work being done in the fields of tourism, hospitality, marine operations and marine maintenance
- undertake supervised work appropriate to the student's skill level
- ask questions about working in the industry
- gain skills related to being at work at Sunferries
- investigate training and employment opportunities in the areas of tourism, hospitality, marine operations and marine maintenance
How to Apply
High schools students in grades 11 and 12 can organise work experience placements through their school's Work Experience Coordinator as part of the school's structured work experience program.
Simply discuss your areas of interest with your Work Experience Coordinator and ask them to contact us via careers@sunferries.com.au with the following information:
- School and student information
- The type of work experience sought (eg, travel agent, diesel fitter, deck hand)
- Two date preferences (maximum of 5 days each)
- A student statement, in the student's own words, outlining what interests them about the industry they have chosen
- Any other relevant comments to support the application, such as previous experience or training
Once your application has been accepted and dates have been confirmed, a Work Experience Agreement must be signed by you and your parent/guardian. Your Work Experience Coordinator must also approve the work experience placement and provide any relevant comments about the student's suitability to participate. All students must be insured through the School's Work Experience Program, and evidence of this insurance must be provided in writing, usually as part of the Work Experience Agreement.
What next?
As you eagerly await your work experience placement, remember to make a note in your diary to phone us the week before you are due to start. During this phone call, we will answer any last minute questions you may have and remind you of any requirements we have, such as start and finish times. We understand this is an exciting opportunity and we expect to be asked lots of questions, so don't be shy!
