Magnetic Island became an important defensive position in World War II with its close proximity to the Townsville military base and deep anchorage areas for war ships. 

Florence, Horseshoe and Arthur Bays all have remaining gun posts and lookouts that were used in the Second World War  The Forts Walk at Florence Bay is a must do for all history buffs with a number of the gun posts, observation towers and a command post still remaining today along the walking track.  The lookout at the top also offers 360 degree views of the Coral Sea, an attribute made very useful in defending our country in World War II. 

A dawn service will be held on Magnetic Island at the RSL Magnetic Island Sub Branch in Arcadia Bay with other ANZAC day celebrations taking place around the island this Sunday.
